English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

English in K-6

Communication skills form a major part of the English program in K-6. Students learn to make requests and choices, as well as interact socially through a range of visual communication systems. Literacy skills are also a part of the English program in K-6 and are developed through a range of school-developed and commercial programs and resources. 

English in high school

English in the high school classes aligns to the life skills outcomes and content of the English syllabus. The high school English program continues to develop students' communication skills using a range of strategies based on individual needs. High school classes have literacy embeded throughout a range of living skills activities such as cooking, HSIE and personal hygiene.
