Personal development, health and physical education

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6 and for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Sport

Students at Bates Drive School participate in regular sport and fitness activities each week, making use of our fantastic playground facilities. They also have access to a weekly sport session taught by The Disability Trust which develops a range of fundamental movement skills.

Health

Health concepts are encouraged and explicitly taught through programs such as theme work, cooking and the canteen trolley. Healthy food choices are a focus of all weekly cooking sessions.

Some classes also include personal care and grooming tasks, such as hair and teeth brushing, in their health program.

Personal development

Personal development covers a range of social and safety skills. A major component of the personal development program at Bates Drive School is the Zones of Regulation. This program assist students to identify their feelings and, where necessary, use calming or sensory strategies to regulate their behaviour.
